For the first time in the 88 year history of Polar Caves, in Rumney, NH, the warm weather and lack of late winter snow is allowing the caves to open three weeks early! Just in time for April vacation, Polar Caves will open for the season on April 17th. The opening date was originally scheduled for May 8th.

“Normally it takes a four-person crew a week to shovel off the boardwalks and another week to clear most of the ice out of the caves.” said Robert Arey, General Manager “This year it only took a couple of hours of shoveling and a few days of work in the caves. ”

The time between the end of ski season and early summer is often called “mud season” and not many outdoor attractions are able to open. This does not leave many options available for parents looking for things to do with their children during school vacation. Polar Caves is the exception and will be open in April, with limited hours. The self-guided cave tour will be available from 10:30am till 3:30pm everyday depending on weather. Take advantage of our early season specials! Admission to the Park will be available at last year’s pricing at: $14.00 for adults, $10.00 for children ages 4-10 and as always, admission is FREE for children under 4. Beginning May 8th, admission prices will be $15.00 for ages 11 and older, $11.00 for ages 4-10, and children under 4-years old are FREE.

Polar Caves Park opened to the public in 1922 and has been a favorite destination for people looking to explore one of Mother Nature’s natural wonders. The caves were formed when the continental glacier passed over New Hampshire depositing granite boulders at the base of Hawk’s Cliff. Over the centuries the caves have been used by Indian Tribes; used to help smuggle slaves north as part of the Underground Railroad; and by local farmers who used the caves as a natural refrigerator.

Today, Polar Caves Park features 8 glacial caves, a friendly family of fallow deer, many kinds of birds, a mining sluice, the Klondike mines, a Maple Sugarhouse and Museum, plus much more. Polar Caves is located at 705 Rumney Route 25 in Rumney, NH, just a short distance from exits 25 and 26 on I93 in Plymouth, NH. We are a proud member of Lakes Region Association, National Caves Association, Waterville Valley Region Chamber of Commerce and White Mountain Attractions.
